165 years of faithfulness
Celebrate with us as we honor the legacy of our faith community
The history of New Covenant Christian Church, previously known as Gay-Lea Christian Church, is a rich tapestry that spans from the pre-Civil War era to its present-day evolution. Originally, this church had a diverse congregation, with both free and enslaved Negro members attending communion and baptismal services alongside white members. Notably, in 1855, the Colored Christian Church was established by a white congregation, Vine Street Christian Church, becoming the first Negro congregation of the Christian Church in Tennessee. Over the years, the church underwent several relocations and name changes, with influential leaders like Elder Preston Taylor leaving to form Lea Avenue Christian Church in 1891.
The church's legacy continued to flourish with the formation of the National Colored Christian Missionary Convention in 1917, which later became the National Convocation. Through visionary leaders like Elder Taylor and innovative pastors like Elder Claude Walker, Gay-Lea Christian Church became a hub of spiritual, educational, and civil rights activities.

In 2002, it was renamed New Covenant Christian Church (DOC) under the leadership of Reverend William E. Crowder, and it embarked on a mission of inclusivity, embracing the LGBTQIA+ community in 2016. In recent years, under the guidance of Reverend Dr. Judy D. Cummings, the church developed a strong reputation as a training ground for young ministers, particularly African American women. The church's history is a testament to its enduring commitment to justice, faith, and community, culminating in the appointment of Reverend Tara Faith Williams as its Senior Pastor in September 2022, with a renewed focus on spiritual growth, worship, and care for all members.
Under Pastor Tara's leadership, New Covenant Christian Church (DOC) remains committed to its mission of inclusivity and growth, placing a strong emphasis on nurturing all age groups and fostering a welcoming environment for all who seek spiritual guidance.
