Dr. Cummings is Senior Pastor of New Covenant Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Nashville, TN where she preaches to empower, encourage, and equip the saints for kingdom ministry. She began this new pastorate in September 2010. She is the first woman to pastor this historic church in its 151 years of existence. Ordained by the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc., at the Temple Church, she served at the historic Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church for the past eight years as the Executive Pastor. In this role, she assisted Pastor William Buchanan in facilitating the business and spiritual affairs of the church enhancing and enabling effective and efficient ministry including supervision of support staff, managing the appropriate allocation of resources, and serving as liaison for all ministry leaders. She is a frequently sought preacher, teacher, revivalist, retreat, and conference speaker. She is the director of the Nashville Chapter of the National Consortium of Black Women in Ministry (NCBWIM), and mentors women in ministry across the USA. Additionally Dr. Cummings serves as adjunct professor of the Masters of Divinity program at Central Baptist Theological Seminary.
Dr. Cummings holds degrees from Tennessee State University School of Nursing; the University of St. Francis; the Master of Divinity degree (M.Div.) from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and has earned the Doctor of Ministry degree in Preaching and Church Leadership from Asbury Theological Seminary. Her dissertation, The Stained Glass Ceiling in Black Baptist Churches: The Continuing Paradox of Liberation, has already contributed exponentially to the study of the role and function of clergywomen in the Church and particularly in the Black Church. Dr. Cummings has publications with the African American Lectionary and other theological journals and papers.
Dr. Cummings works diligently in the community serving on various community boards. She is a commissioner with the Metropolitan Planning Commission, member of the advisory board member for Bordeaux Long-Term Care, President-elect of Women In Numbers (WIN), Vice-president of the Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship, member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the National Association of Professional Women. Appointed by Mayor Karl Dean, she also serves on the Mayor's Minority Business Advisory Council.
In the midst of her busy schedule, varied activities, and devotion to the Lord, she is the proud wife of Deacon Charles M. Cummings, Sr.; the fruit of thirty-five years of divine marriage are two children, Michelle Steele, Charles Jr., and two adorable grandsons, Aubrey Cummings and Sheldon Laurence Steele.
