William Eugene Crowder, Jr.
Rev.
Dr. William Eugene Crowder, Jr. is the Senior
Pastor of New Covenant Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in Nashville, TN. He was
born and nurtured in Memphis, TN. In 1987 he
graduated from Hillcrest High School where he
was the Student Commencement Speaker. In the
same year he entered Central State University as
a political science major and graduated in 1992
after completing an outstanding academic,
athletic and political career.
While at
Central State, Dr. Crowder was very active in
the Student Government Association in which he
served as Vice-President (1989-90) and President
(1991-92). He led the University’s football team
to one national and numerous black college
championships. In addition, he was very involved
with the Delta Xi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Incorporated. Because of such
astounding leadership and athletic abilities, he
twice received the Brother of the Year Award and
the Toyota Leadership Award.
In August
of 1992 Dr. Crowder entered United Theological
Seminary in Dayton, OH. At United, he served as
Student Trustee Eligible and as Chairperson of
the Vision to Victory Worship Committee (Martin
Luther King Jr. Commemoration). In addition, he
was Chaplain of the African-American
Seminarians’ Caucus. Dr. Crowder received
his Master of Divinity degree in May 1995. Dr.
Crowder finished his Doctorate at Memphis
Theological Seminary in May 2005.
Having
acknowledged his call to preach in July of 1990,
Dr. Crowder was licensed by the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in 1994 and ordained in
1995. He served as Student Minister of First
United Christian Church in Xenia, OH from
1992-94, and as Youth Pastor of Mississippi
Blvd. Christian Church (Memphis, TN) in 1995. In
September of the same year, he began his current
pastorate at New Covenant Christian Church.
Under his leadership, New Covenant started
outreach, young adult, tutorial and liturgical
dance ministries. In addition, the congregation
received a $3.4 million HUD grant to build a
52-unit housing complex for the elderly.
Dr. Crowder is married to Rev. Dr. Stephanie
Buckhanon Crowder, an ordained Baptist and
Disciples of Christ minister. They are the very
proud parents of William Rowland-Jackson Crowder
and Sollomon Rowland-Buckhanon Crowder. |
