New Covenant Christian Church
History
PROUD AND BLESSED
HISTORY
The New Covenant Christian Church
can trace its origin back before the Civil War, when the
Black Sunday School was organized by First Christian
Church. In 1849, a group from the Black Sunday School
became a separate congregation under the leadership of
Elder Peter Lowery. This congregation became Grapevine
Christian Church, first meeting in west Nashville on
property of General William Harding. Later this group
worshipped in the home of the pastor, Peter Lowery.
In 1866, the church
moved to its own building on Vine and Crawford Avenue
and attained complete independence from the white
congregation. Records refer this congregation as First
Colored Christian Church and Second Christian Church.
It later moved to Gay Street and took the name Gay
Street Christian Church. This congregation was one of
the first to have a pipe organ in the state of
Tennessee.
Preston Taylor, an
early leader in the struggle for Black rights served
this congregation for four years. In 1866, he left Gay
Street and organized Lea Avenue Christian Church. In
1955, the two congregations merged and formed Gay-Lea
Christian Church. The present site at 2201-Osage Street
was dedicated in 1957.
Gay-Lea Christian
Church officially became New Covenant Christian Church
in April 2002 after much prayer and discussion.
